UNIT 9: DESERTS
Lesson: Speaking Period:56 Date of preparing:…………….
I. Aims: Help Ss develop their speaking skill by explaining why some kinds of trees and animals can exist in deserts ;Talking about natural features of deserts & Explaining why somethings should be brought along while going across a desert
II. Objective: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to talk about natural features of deserts and explaain why some things should be brought along while going across a desert

Warm- up: ( 3’)
T- Ss
1. Pre-reading: 13’
Game: Board-runner
- T uses the pictures on some animals and trees glued on the board and then gives some information about each. Ss listen and run to the b/b to slap on the right picture.
- T asks Ss to look at the pictures and answer the questions:
+ Which animal and plant can’t live in the desert?
+ Why?
> T leads Ss to new lesson
TASK 1: Choosing the right options by checking
- T explains some more words:
* Pre –teach vocab : (pictures)
+ eucalyptus (n) + cactus (n)
+ crocodile (n) + lizard (n)
- T conducts choral reading.
- T introduces some useful suggestions to use in the dialoge
+ What kinds of trees and animals on the list do you think might exist in the desert?
+ Why?
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to do Task 1, check the trees and aninals that might live in a desert and explain the choice.
- -T goes round to oversee them
- Divided into two teams, join in the game
- Take notes
- Read in chorus.

TASK 2: Discussion:
- T asks Ss to look at the pictures and describe them quickly and find out the natural features of deserts.
- T goes round to oversee or give them some suggestions.
* Hints:

+ little rainfall, much sunshine
+ few grasses, few animals, few people
+ sandy……
* Useful suggestions:
+ What do you know about ….?
+ It is said that …..
+ It says in the books that …..
+ I think …..
- T calls 2 good students on board to make a conversation (model)
- T asks Ss to talk in front of the class about the natural features of deserts.
- T gives comments
- T asks:
+ What would you do if you had to cross a desert?
+ What will you bring with you if you cross a desert?

3. Post-reading: 8’
TASK 3: Discussion:
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4 Ss to discuss and choose the five most important things to bring along with them in an expedition across a desert and then explain their choice.
- T goes round to oversee and encourages Ss to express their choice .
- T asks representatives from groups of Ss to present their talks in front of the class.
- T gives comments
- Discuss in groups
( 5 things: + a knife ( protect you from the attack of dangerous animals or bad people
+ a wrist compass ( ------
+ a box of matches ( ….
+ food and drink ( …
+ a mosquito net ( …
- Talk in front of the class.
