    S: No, they weren’t.

    - form:
    If clause
    Main clause

    S+ had +p.p
    S+ would/could + have + p.p

    - meaning: the third conditional is used to talk about unreal situation in the past, that means the things did not happen in the past or to express regrets.
    - use: the third conditional does not focus on the present and future. The time in this type is the past and signifies a completed action in the past. The condition cannot be fulfilled because the action in the if clause did not happen.
