- Bring a yardstick and a whistle to show to s.s and ask them what the things are.
- Read the words aloud.
- Introduce the sounds / w/ and / j /.
Activity 1: Listen and Repeat
- Read the sounds and the words.
- Ask s.s to repeat.
- Call on some s.s to read.
Activity 2: Practice reading the sentences
- Ask s.s to work in pairs to practice reading the sentences.
- Move around the class to control and give help.
- Ask s.s to find the words containing the sounds /w/ and / j / in the reading text.
Grammar: Gerund and Participle.
- Elicit and give a presentation of the grammartical point :
+ The Gerund and the present participle have the same form : V-ing
+ The Gerund often acts like a varb and a noun at the same time . It can be used :
As the subject of a sentence.
As complement of a verb.
After preposition.
After certain verb such as: enjoy, miss, finish,delay, avoid, suggest, risk, postpone, admit. . .
+ The Present participle indicates action, more like a words or an adjective. It can be used :
As a verb in the continuous form.
As an adjective.
To replace a relative clause.
To replace Subject + Verb in the main or subordinate clause.
After the words catch, find, leave + O
After some words such as : waste, spend, go, be busy.
After the words of perception such as: see, hear, smell, observe, watch. . .
+ Perfect gerund is the perfect form of the gerund. It is used to refer to a past action.
+ Perfect participle is the perfect form of the present participle. It is used when one action happen before another action.
Activity 1: Exercise 1(p.54)
- Ask s.s to do the exercise 1 on page 54.
- Call on some s.s to give the answers.
- Check with the class.
Activity2 : Exercise 2(p.54)
- Put s.s into pairs.
- In pairs, ask them to do the exercise 2 on page 54 .
Activity 3: Exercise 3 (p. 55)
- Ask s.s to do the exercise 3 on page 55.
- Go over the answers with the class.
- Rewrite the following sentences :
He rushed out of the room. He was shouting at the top of his voice.
